There has always been a new major smartphone emerging to join the other major tech giants. So which one is next? It’s been almost 10 years since we saw a brand new smartphone company… but is the new one finally here?

Let’s take a look at a recent smartphone that has been gaining increasing interest: the Nothing phone.

What is the nothing phone brand?

The Nothing phone was announced and released in 2022, with 4 months between its first-ever public mention and official release date. It was created by (you guessed it) Nothing, a 2021 company led by Carl Pei, the former One-Plus co-founder. Pei wanted to create a new smartphone that gave a breath of fresh air to the tech industry which he had described as going ‘stagnant’.

They released their first phone in 2022 as we mentioned, which led to another further 3 phones releasing up until the current day. In fact, Nothing has announced their next smartphone which will be released in March 2025. What we love about their phones is that they don’t have a special name or anything too dramatic, their phones are simply called Phone, Phone 2, Phone 2a.

What is the new Nothing product?

Nothing doesn’t only stick to phones. Like a lot of mobile companies, they also branch out into audio like earbuds, and smartwatches. Nothing has a sub-brand called CMF (Colour.Material.Finish) where they sell these lines and focus heavily on the product's design aspects, they also offer some CMF-specialised smartphones. However in this blog, we are focussing on the main series of smartphones, so let’s get back to them.

What is the name of the light on the back of the nothing phone?

The first thing we guarantee you notice about the Nothing phone is its design. The back of the phone completely lights up in a circular layout. Nothing calls this light symbol a Glyph Light, allowing users to see certain notifications without having to look at the actual screen to reduce the amount of screen time we have.

The lights on the phone are used for more features than you’d expect, they can be programmed to receive notifications, timers, battery life indicator, volume checker and our favourite feature, the Glyph light is shaped like a circle making it the perfect built-in ring light!

What's special about the nothing phone?

Looking at the phone itself, it resembles an iPhone quite easily. The camera placement is the same, it’s a touchscreen smartphone and has no button. The colour options of the Nothing phone are also the same. However, the light on the phone isn’t only where Nothing (literally) outshines the competition. They have a minimalist logo hidden on the back of the phone to avoid those flashy watermarks, the back of the phone is also fully transparent to allow users to see the different interconnections of the phone and integrated with ChatGPT. Overall, we love the Nothing phone. It’s unique and original and its special features genuinely make the phone simpler to use, they aren’t pointless add-ons. We have never seen a phone with a built-in light that can be programmed for additional uses and used naturally as a light source.
