Why Are Smartphones ‘Going Slim’

Recently, many big smartphone companies have begun to introduce a new variety of smartphones, the Slim Edition. These are super thin smartphones and we’re beginning to see more and more concept ideas for these types of phones. With the ‘world's slimmest smartphone’ being announced at recent events, it’s time to see why this tech trend has arrived so suddenly and give our opinions about it. Let’s get into it.

What is Tecno spark phone?

At the WMC 2025 (World Mobile Congress 2025), Chinese smartphone brand Tecno announced and revealed their upcoming slim smartphone prototype called the Tecno Spark Slim. This phone has already been branded as the ‘world's slimmest smartphone’ being 5.75mm thick featuring 2 50MP cameras and a 5200 mAh battery.

Before this new concept, we saw the likes of the Oppo Find N5, the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold and the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 taking the top positions for the world's slimmest mobile phones. As we mentioned, the Tecno Spark Slim is still only a concept, but since having such a positive reception at WMC 2025 and receiving much more attention from the media, it’ll be interesting to see where this phone goes in the future.

Are phones getting thinner?

Suddenly, it appears that many other big tech brands are also ‘going slim’. Apple and Samsung are rumoured to be releasing slim editions of their current smartphones called iPhone 17 Air and Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge.

So why are smartphones going slim? It’s only been in the last couple of years that we’ve seen talk on these new types of phones. There are 2 reasons why we think smartphones are going slim, practicality and trending.

Practicality – If a phone is thinner it’s therefore smaller and lighter, making it easier to carry around. These small phones can easily be slipped into a pocket, into a bag or other small spots making it more convenient for use on the go.

Trending – Both popularity and technically, smartphone companies are always trying to outdo each other, if one mentions they are going to attempt a slim edition phone, the rest will follow. Equally, new tech trends and inventions mean that hard drives can be smaller meaning the phone can physically be more compact. Because the phones are smaller, they can also be sold slightly cheaper, it’s great for the market!

Conclusion:

Whilst we’re all for exploring a new industry in the smartphone market, we can’t help but wonder if ‘slimming tech’ is really that great for sustainability and durability. If a phone is so thin, is there a chance it's prone to more damage? Could it easily snap if extra pressure is applied? Personally, we wouldn’t invest in a slim edition smartphone, but it’ll be great to see how this phone performs in terms of overheating problems and maintaining power once it is released.
