iPhone Battery Health: Signs It's Time for an Upgrade

Now we have entered the new year, you don't want to begin your new year with a broken phone. And no, we're not talking about a cracked screen or smashed camera lens. We're talking about battery health! Poor battery health can cause many problems whilst you are out exploring, trying to get home, on the phone to friends and in many other scenarios. We're here to uncover some of the signs that prove your battery is damaged, so you understand when it's time to get yourself an upgrade. Let's get into it!

Why does my phone die so easily?

Most modern smartphones can go for hours without a single charge. On average, the iPhone 15 should go 50 hours on a single charge. (According to data from DXOMARK) The iPhone 14 is estimated to last around 10 hours, the Samsung Galaxy S24 at 13 hours and the Pixel 9 at 13 hours on a single charge. If your phone struggles for battery life after an hour, it's a clear sign your phone's battery is packing up.

Please remember the amount of time you use your device will influence how long the battery will last. For example; a normal everyday smartphone user who only uses their mobile to make calls and reply to occasional texts may last 12 hours. However, a photographer constantly using the camera roll app and various editing apps may only last up to 5 hours.

Why does my phone take so long to load apps?

When apps begin to load very slowly, this is usually a sign that your device is struggling to maintain speed and power. It takes more battery power than usual to perform basic tasks like loading an app and this can happen when your phone is quite old because the the performance of the mobile is no longer as sharp as previously.

What is meant by battery capacity?

On the iPhone, the battery capacity measures the battery amount the device can hold as the mobile gets older. This doesn't mean the battery percentage in the corner of the phone, as no matter what the maximum for this will always be 100%. In the Settings app, you can check out the battery capacity of your phone yourself. As your phone ages, it's capacity will drop by a couple of percentages over the years. When it starts to drop noticeably low, this is a perfect time to buy a new phone.

How do i stop my phone from overheating?

If your phone has a faulty battery, it can cause your phone to overwork therefore making your phone overheat. Although this is a key sign your phone battery might be damaged, overheating can also occour when you're in a physically hot place and your phone can't handle the heat. If you have too many apps running or your phone is charging with no ventilation, this can also cause overheating.

With all the other factors we have mentioned, this is a sign your battery is damaged, but if it's the only noticable factor, we wouldn't assume this is due to battery faults.

How to fix a slow charging problem?

Again, similar to the overheating factor, if your phone is struggling to charge, this could be a faulty battery sign because your broken device has to work harder to pick up the charge. Equally, a slow-charging phone may just mean your charger is broken. Either the wire is frayed, the connector is bent, or you just bought a dodgy charger. Make sure to keep your wires secure to reduce the risk of a damaged charger.
